Task 2: Nowadays eating habits of people around the world are changing, causing them many health problems, including obesity. Why do people tend to eat so badly? What can be done to improve their eating habits? Along with the growth of society comes an array of health-related issues, including obesity given people changing diets. This essay will first delve into the underlying reasons of this phenomenon before proposing some viable solutions to improve the situation. Bad eating habits are largely attributed to the inclination towards a sedentary lifestyle and food advertising. Regarding the former, in light of hectic schedules, many people prioritize fast food and convenience meals, which are often high in calories, sugar, and unhealthy fats rather than cooking by themselves. This shift in priorities often leads to serious health diseases such as overweight, diabetes and even cancer. This is compounded by food advertisements, driving people to buy sugary drinks, high-fat snacks and other unhealthy foods. The marketing strategies of chains like KFC, Lotteria, and Texas Chicken serve as a testament to this trend. To change people's poor dietary habits, the following measures should be taken. First, it is imperative for governments to introduce policies or regulations that tightly control or ban junk food advertising. This can be achieved through initiatives such as imposing hefty fines on violating companies and censoring advertisements’ content before releasing it to the market. For example, the UK has banned junk food ads on TV during children's programming and restricted online ads targeting kids, as well as limited promotional offers on unhealthy foods. In tandem with this, the public needs to be fully cognizant of the health risks posed by overeating and the lack of exercise. This knowledge should be involved in educational programmes for children and spread through several campaigns organized by policymakers. Such a two-pronged approach could go a long way towards cultivating a good habit for eating. In conclusion, what seems to be the core of unhealthy eating patterns may stem from inactive lifestyles and commercialization. Through heightened awareness and the enforcement of stringent regulations, society can work towards reversing this troubling trend. Task 2: Some people say in order to prevent illness and disease, governments should focus on reducing environmental pollution and housing problems. To what extent do you agree and disagree? Along with the growth of human society comes a perennial debate about what governments should do to improve public health. A school of thought holds that it is imperative for them to alleviate environmental degradation and residential challenges. I personally disagree with this proposal, despite acknowledging the reasons for it. Advocates for the enhancement of the environment and housing issues might argue that its direct impacts on public health are irrevocable. Mitigating environmental contamination, they say, can lead to cleaner air and water, thereby reducing respiratory diseases and waterborne illnesses. Also, access to fresh air and clean water sources could lead to healthier food products, which directly benefit the digestive system. By the same token, addressing overcrowding and lack of sanitation might advance living conditions and better overall health for residents. This can be seen in the Dharavi Redevelopment Project in Mumbai. By replacing informal settlements with modern housing and improving access to clean water and proper sewage systems, the project sought to enhance living standards and residents' overall well-being. However, the aforementioned notion is deeply flawed given the fact that a singular focus on the environment and housing is insufficient and that a multi-faceted approach should be adopted. First, governments should prioritize incentivizing individuals to pursue the medical field. This can be achieved through some initiatives such as updating health-related educational programs and providing scholarships for outstanding students or graduates with high entrance exam scores. In tandem with this, it is also essential to raise public awareness, as understanding the repercussions of diseases and illnesses can encourage residents to adopt sustainable practices and maintain healthy living environments. The numerous scholarships offered by Singapore's Ministry of Health Holdings to attract talent to the healthcare sector perfectly exemplify this approach. In conclusion, although tackling pollution and housing challenges can offer substantial benefits, I fervently believe that a combination of actions is necessary to improve overall public well-being. Task 2: With growing number of population in cities. Many people are living in small homes that don’t have outdoor spaces. Is this a positive or negative development? Along with the explosion of population comes a debate concerning the lack of open-air spaces in city housing. While this trend may indeed offer some substantial benefits, these are eclipsed by the potential drawbacks posed to city dwellers. Granted, proponents of compact living contend that eliminating gardens and balconies within urban dwellings can optimize land use. Such buildings, they say, will maximise the residential capacity of a given area, accommodating a larger population. It is estimated that areas with concrete houses can accommodate five times more residents than their counterparts. Social interactions, alongside a strong sense of community, and inclination towards sustainable lifestyle are other advantages. Not only does the lack of outdoor spaces encourage people to seek out public parks and community spaces, but it also fosters a preference for minimalism and reduced unnecessary consumption. The argument in favour of adding open-air areas to houses is further fortified by the numerous disadvantages it can bring to humans. First, physical and mental health issues given the absence of natural light and fresh air, as well as opportunities for physical activities such as gardening and recreation, are the foremost concerns. Many scientists and researchers have emphasized a strong correlation between spending time in nature and improved mental health. Residents without access to outdoor spaces may experience increased feelings of isolation, stress, and even depression. A study by the University of Exeter shows that people who spend at least two hours a week in nature are more likely to report good health and psychological well-being. In conclusion, although the trend of smaller homes without outdoor spaces offers some benefits in terms of land use efficiency, its negative consequences for the health and well-being of residents are far more significant. Therefore, it is essential to prioritize the creation of green spaces and outdoor areas in urban planning to ensure a better quality of life for city dwellers. Word count: 313 words. You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. The table below shows information about the population of New Zealand from 2011 to 2012 by age group. Summarize the formation by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant. You should write at least 150 words. The table depicts the number of New Zealand people in different age groups in 2011 and 2012 as well as their fluctuations during the surveyed period. Overall, while the national population grew slightly, the younger age groups experienced a small decrease. In contrast, the number of middle-aged and senior citizens increased, especially those over 65 years old. When examining oldest age group, we can see that they accounted for only a modest part of the population with under 600 thousand people in 2012 - less than half the number of people aged 40 to 64 in the same year. However, they were the group with the most significant increase of 4%, which was eightfold that of the 40 to 64 group. In the case of younger citizens, there was a slight decline in the number of people under 40, with a 0.2% decrease in both the under 15 and 15 to 39 categories. Despite this modest decrease, these two groups combined still took up half of the population, and those aged 15 to 39 was the most dominant age group of the society with approximately 1.5 million people, though the 40 to 64 group were a close second with 1.3 million citizens. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. ANSWER: The maps illustrate a library's ground floor in 2001 and its redevelopment in 2009. Overall, the library's floor underwent several alterations, most notably the addition of some rooms and the expansion of tables to meet study requirements. In 2001, there were eight small tables centrally located for study and reading, and a fiction room behind. Self-help and History were situated on the left side and Newspaper & Periodicals at the right corner. Additionally, a librarian's desk was positioned just behind the entrance, adjacent to the stairs. By 2009, the tables were expanded into four longer ones and added to replace the former fiction. Self-help and History were reduced in size, making space for Fiction, Kitchen, Economics and Law. Newspaper & Periodicals were replaced by Films & DVDs, next to the newly added computer area. At the backmost part of the library, a children's area was built, dedicated to children's activities. Throughout those changes, the librarian's desk and the stairs remained unchanged. The plans below show the ground floor of a library in 2001 and how it was redeveloped in 2009. The provided diagram illustrates the renovations made to a habour from 2000 until today. It is clear that many customizations occurred based on the services facilities of the habour. The initial layout of the area was mostly kept unchanged. On the West side of the platform, new areas for showers and toilets are built to the North of each car park. The larger parking space is now connected to the main road instead. Besides, two vast water areas are now designated for fishing boats and private yachts. The Marina private yacht dock is now on the Southern bigger site instead of the previous space. A new platform was built parallel to the old passenger ferries’ dock. Regarding the Southern side, a new site for cafes and shops have been opened to the right of the lifeboat area. The old castle is now replaced with a hotel to accommodate visitors. And the beach next to it, which was previously offered to the public, is now designated exclusively to the hotel guests. Topic: more government's money should be invested in teaching science than other subjects in order for a country to develop and progress. To what extent do you agree or disagree? In this day and age, teaching science in school has been a source of controversy. One school of thought is that the national budget should be used for educating science for students, while I agree that it is beneficial for both individuals and the nation to teach science and other subjects. To begin with, science plays an important role in society. Firstly, at the individual level, people can have more job opportunities in the future by learning science. Due to the development of technology, the demand for technological jobs, such as designing or fixing computers, has increased. Thus, by understanding more aspects of science, people can apply for many kinds of jobs. Additionally, at national levels, educating science can foster economic growth. In fact, learning science contributes to the existence of many new inventions, such as new crop species redundant in disease, enhancing productivity. As a result, it can meet the demand for the local market and exported products, contributing to economic growth. On the other hand, other subjects are also crucial. By learning these subjects, students not only can adapt to diverse work positions but also can solve many unexpected situations. For instance, the student can improve their mental and physical health through physical education classes. They also can be better at calculation by learning math courses. To sum up, educating science can help people have ample job opportunities and bolster economic growth, I strongly believe that it is advantageous to learn both science and other subjects. Task 2: Some people think that living in big cities is bad for people’s health. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. It is believed that living in large cities results in citizens’ lower overall well-being. From my perspective, I agree with this statement It is undeniable that living in large cities can lead to physical health problems. Cities have been modernized for a long time with technological advancements, up-to-date transportation systems, new large buildings, leading to a convenient life. However, urbanization can also cause environmental challenges such as climate change, deforestation, and different kinds of pollution. Consequently, these environmental problems can lead to respiratory disease such as asthma. For example, many parents in the USA are concerned about their children’s health as they may have to go to school in weeks away, which means they have to go outside frequently and absorb carbon dioxide from many forms of transport. Moreover, negative mental health can also stem from residing in large cities. Despite the fact that big cities have a lot of handy facilities that help people streamline tasks in daily life, it can result in a higher cost of living than in rural areas; hence, city-dwellers should work hard and try to get high-paying jobs to live in competitive modern cities unless they risk facing stress and poor mental health. We need not look further than the case of Vietnamese laborers, especially those in Ho Chi Minh City. They might feel stressed when they have to work more hours than the average working time in Vietnam to meet their demands and achieve a better standard of living. In conclusion, I completely agree that living in big cities can negatively affect both people’s physical health and mental health. In my view, local authorities in big cities should spearhead effective initiatives to improve people’s health. Task 2: Some people think that living in big cities is bad for people’s health. Despite greater access to school education, many adults today still cannot read or write. How does this affect them in life? What can government do to help them?
In this modern society, there is controversy about the hardships that illiterate adults are having to endure while there are so many educational institutions providing them with knowledge. In this essay, I will analyze several drawbacks of illiteracy and propose some feasible solutions to mitigate this phenomenon. It is understandable that various limitations associated with literacy have affected people's lives. Among the challenges posed by illiteracy, the inability to comprehend crucial documents hampers access to employment opportunities. To specify, it is difficult for people to do office work if they are unable to understand documents or projects which are provided with specilized informations. As a result, most of them may have to rely on manual work such as jobs in agricultural and construction sectors. For example, due to the low-quality educational facilities in some African countries, the rate of illiterate citizens is high which means that they are poor, lack education, and miss out on opportunities to join the workforce. On top of that, illiterate adults may become victims of criminals, especially when they accidentally access dangerous links on the social media or even tricked into signing unofficial documents which can threaten their financial status and their lives. For instance, the hackers may create some links to gain access to their bank accounts in case of stealing the owners’ money. Therefore, this can negatively affect their lives and their loved ones. However, there are a number of solutions proposed for governments to address these problems. Concerning these issues, the government seriously allocates financial budgets for educational programs to ensure the education of disadvantaged people in remote areas. Accessible schools should be provided for underprivileged basic knowledge to pursue more employment opportunities for them instead of relying on menial work. Furthermore, another solution to eliminate criminals is to strengthen strict control of information posted online and may impose administrative sanctions on those who regularly send threatening links. Additionally, governments can also open webinars or events to educate citizens about the way to avoid cyber crimes by themselves. By strictly implementing these policies, the government can overcome these difficulties and give everyone the opportunity to compete equally as they enter job markets and reduce the risk of criminals, creating a more cilvilized society. In conclusion, the inability to read and write limits people’s choice of profession and places them under risks of cyber criminals. Nevertheless, this issue can be partially resolved by the suggested remedies. Task 2: In many countries, the number of animals and plants is declining. Why do you think this is happening? How can this issue be solved? Along with the growth of human society comes the disappearance of flora and fauna. This essay will first delve into the underlying causes of this phenomenon before proposing some viable solutions to improve the situation. The decline in biodiversity around the world is largely attributed to habitat destruction and illegal hunting. Regarding the former, due to industry, growing human population and agriculture, land development occurs at the expense of many species' natural habitats, prioritizing fostering industrialization and housing demands. This shift in priorities often leads to climate change, and environmental pollution, affecting the survival and reproduction of certain animals and plants. This is compounded by illegal poaching, which drives some animal numbers to endangered levels. The trade-in of exotic animals for pets, traditional medicine, or the black market as a significant threat to many species is a testament to this notion. To combat the loss of plant and animal species, the following measures should be taken. First, it is imperative for governments to introduce more strict laws applying to habitat conservation. This can be achieved through initiatives such as increasing penalties and strengthening supervision over logging activities or opening national parks. For example, countries like Costa Rica have successfully implemented national parks and protected areas to conserve biodiversity. In tandem with this, public awareness should be emphasized through campaigns and education. Schools can add environment education as a new subject to their curriculum to raise students’ awareness. Such a two-pronged approach could go a long way towards cultivating a sense of responsibility to preserve the diversity of our planet’s plants and animals. In conclusion, what seems to be at the core of species decline lies in natural habitat devastation and illicit hunting. By fostering awareness and implementing strict laws, society can work towards reversing this troubling trend. TASK 2: With the growing number of population in cities, many people are living in small homes that don't have outdoor spaces. Is this a positive or negative development? It is an undeniable fact that more and more people are living in small accommodations without outdoor spaces as a result of the increasing population in urban areas. This trend has garnered a myriad of views, ranging from those who wholeheartedly embrace it to those who express reservations. While there are certain advantages associated with this trend, I am in complete belief that the negative effects significantly surpass the potential benefits. The subsequent discussion will meticulously delve into the reasons underpinning my stance. A number of benefits tied to living in compact houses without outdoor areas are minimization of space usage and the convenience in accessing appliances. Firstly, accommodating in tight spaces reduces the land utilization, which is advantageous for the process of urbanization. Since houses can be built in a limited area, a larger number of dwellers can be attracted, thus contributing greatly to the labour force. Secondly, access to household appliances is much easier due to the compact size of it. This is extremely beneficial for people with disabilities. For example, those ones who are in wheelchairs can move around the house with ease. Despite the evident advantages tied to this trend, I strongly believe that the downsides significantly surpass the associated merits. Mostly stemming from the health concerns and negativities toward the environment. At first thought, it is undeniable that the mental health of people who live in those areas will be affected. Their mental states might be infuenced awfully because of the lack of connections to nature. The reason for this is the unavailability of open outdoor spaces. Furthermore, the natural environment can be at risk due to this trend. As the number of accommodations rises, a higher amount of electricity will be required, leading to a much larger quantity of emission from energy generation. Moreover, the demand for other supplies such as food, water and essential goods, causing increasing over exploitation. In conclusion, after meticulous consideration of the negativities associated with the increasing number of residents living in compact sized accommodations, it emerges conspicuously that the downsides of mental health concerns and environmental issues far eclipse the potential benefits. As a result, my endorsement of the proposition that the aforementioned trend should be considered disavantageous remains unwavering. TASK 2: With the growing number of population in cities, many people are living in small homes that don't have outdoor spaces. Is this a positive or negative development? It is an undeniable fact t... Read more

Some people think that too much money has been spent looking after and repairing old buildings, so we should knock down old buildings and build modern ones instead. To what extent do you agree or disagree? The question of whether old buildings should be repaired or demolished in order to build new ones invites polarized perspectives, ranging from those who wholeheartedly endorse the assertion to those who express reservations. From my standpoint, I am in complete agreement with the opinion of replacing these structures. At first thought, the preservation of old buildings comes with a lot of positive effects, most noticeably on the local’s tourism. It is undeniable that keeping and repairing historical structures attracts a huge amount of tourists. This contributes greatly to the economical growth of the region by providing local businesses with a source of income. For example the temples in China and castles in Europe, in which hundreds of millions of people visit annually. Despite the evident beneficial impact of preserving old structures, the act of putting down and reconstructing these buildings seems much more convincing for a number of reasons, including the reduction in expenses and the high level of safety. Preserving a historical related structure can be extremely costly. Since the details are and the complexity of these figures were well considered and greatly sophisticated, which leads to difficulties in finding replacements and wastes a vast amount of government expense. One example being the old buildings of the previous Chinese dynasties that seem impossible to preserve. Moreover, the level of safety in these structures need to be reconsidered. The reason is that they were constructed such a long time ago. Therefore, demolishing those and setting up new buildings is much more reasonable. Moreover, reconstructing facilities that meet the society requirements is much more vital. Since the start of the innovation era, a plethora of historic buildings have been replaced by modern offices or housing for dwellers, enhancing the region’s economy without the need for tourism. These changes typically take place in industrialized countries such as the USA. In conclusion, after meticulous consideration of whether old buildings should be repaired or demolished in order to build new ones, it emerges conspicuously that the beneficial impacts of replacing them with mordernised facilities are undeniable. As a result, my endorsement of the proposition that old facilities ought to be destroyed and new buildings need to be set up remains unwavering.
