Winter was coming. A little sparrow had a broken wing. It couldn't fly south like other birds. Cold and alone, it searched a tree for help.
First, it asked the birch. The birch said no. Next, it asked the oak, but the oak was afraid the bird would eat its acorns. The willow also refused to help, saying it didn't know the sparrow.
The sparrow felt sad and tried to fly away. Then it heard a voice. The friendly spruce tree said the sparrow could stay on its warmest branch all winter. The prickly pine tree said it would block the cold north wind. The loving juniper offered its berries for food.
The North Wind noticed the spruce, pine, and juniper being kind to the little sparrow.
That winter night, the bitterly cold North Wind blew through the forest, touching the leaves of the birch, oak and willow, causing their leaves to fall to the ground.
But the North Wind chose to avoid the spruce, pine and juniper trees, allowing their leaves to stay green throughout the winter.
