Some people think that competition at work, at school and in daily life is a good thing. Others believe that we should try to cooperate more, rather than competing against each other. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
In this competitive society, there has been ongoing debate about whether competition or cooperation at work and in everyday life is more beneficial. While some believe that by competing with each other, individuals could enhance their specialities, others argue that collaboration fosters a more supportive and productive environment. Personally, I firmly advocate a balanced approach, recognizing the value of the methods outlined above. On the one hand, it is admitted that competition can be a powerful driving force. Obviously, this encourages employees and people to strive for excellence which tends to result in higher performance and innovation. For example, in the study environments, if students compete for top grades, they would devote themselves in developing their studies, resulting in deeper understanding of the knowledge and better academic outcomes. Similarly, competition at work for promotions or higher positions and income is a major contributor to motivating employees to work hard in a corporate context. Nevertheless, at home, competition rarely has a positive effect. Family members who constantly compete for admiration and recognition are likely to suffer from poor mental health. Therefore, it is essential to maintain a harmonious relationship between normal daily life and working life. On the other hand, working together can easily create approachable benefits to improve one’s efficiency and practical skills. When individuals work in a team, regardless of school or work environments, they are more likely to experience high levels of motivation, and more crucially, enjoyment. This can be a better way to reduce work competitiveness, stress and also generate more quality relationships between colleagues. For instance, some football players who participate in a competition, the most memorable and lasting memories of their experience often come from small moments of camaraderie shared with teammates. This is why many people consider time spent working as a team toward a common goal to be the highlight of life. In Conclusion, although competition can create innovation, cooperation provides a more important environment for mutual respect and enjoyment of life; Therefore, I admit that depending on the situation, finding a cooperative understanding is mandatory. In this competitive society, there has been ongoing debate about whether competition or cooperation at work and in everyday life is more beneficial. Task 2: Some people think technology development decreases crime, while others believe it actually encourages crime. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. It is believed that technological progress reduces crime, while others argue that it causes a reverse pattern. In this essay, both views will be discussed, before a personal stance is taken on the matter, asserting that technology development encourages crime. On the one hand, people think that technological advancement can lead to low crime rates because more high-tech security measures have been taken to prevent crime. Many technological devices such as CCTV cameras and facial recognition software have been improved to enhance security systems at housing and workplaces, deterring potential criminals. Moreover, technological development can facilitate crime reduction through communication devices. For instance, mobile devices can enable police and citizens to communicate with each other in real-time and respond quickly in emergencies. As a result, criminals need to stop doing illegal behaviors, unless they risk facing legal punishment. On the other hand, it is undeniable that criminals have become more sophisticated in their methods thanks to technological development, resulting in encouraging crime. Although modern technology can help people streamline tasks and access entertainment platforms, it can facilitate identity theft and cyber fraud as users are required to provide their personal information to access most social networking apps. For instance, many hackers can now easily manage users’ Facebook accounts and use them for illegal purposes such as online fraud. Furthermore, criminals might easily track citizens through location tracking devices, therefore it can help them commit crimes conveniently. In conclusion, while technological progress can pave the way for preventing crime in society due to up-to-date technological and communication devices, I believe it can contribute to committing crime through social networking sites and location tracking. In my view, governments should spearhead technological initiatives to deter crime, ensuring the long-term well-being of humans. The working week should be shorter and workers should have a longer weekend. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. The question of whether the working week should be reduced and the employees ought to have longer weekends invites polarized perspectives, ranging from those who wholeheartedly endorse it to others who express reservation. From my standpoint, I am in complete agreement with the assertion above. The subsequent discussion will meticulously delve into the reasons underpinning my stance. On the one hand, long working hours during weekdays negatively affects employees’ health and mental state. Firstly, the physical health of workers will undoubtedly be weakened. While blue-collar workers can face vision defects along with a number of issues associated with body functions. Heavy laborers will suffer from spine problems. For instance, a great number of Vietnamese have been recorded having issues related with either their body functions or skeletal system. Secondly, the mental health of these workers are concerning. The lack of social hours due to extensive working duration results in a plethora of mental issues, for example depression and sleep deprivation. Furthermore, too much exposure to these problems leads to detrimental body disfunctions, posing a threat to people’s lives. On the other hand, providing an extended weekend absolutely enhances employees productivity and social connections. Evident increase in employees’ efficiency can be found in companies with prolonged off-days. Having enough time to rest helps reduce the intesensity and pressure on people’s minds, thus enhancing the speed in which they can process information later. This is similar to computers, which requires clearance of storage after a specific amount of time. Secondly, having sufficient time for social activities is instrumental. The duration that most people require for their connections ranges from 2-3 days per week. Workers who are provided with enough social time in big companies such as Google or Apple have proved enhancement in their physical and mental abilities, making them much more efficient in the working time. In conclusion, after meticulous consideration of whether the working week should be reduced and the weekends should be extended. It emerges conspicuously that the associated beneficial impacts on productivity and social connections are undeniably crucial. As a result, my endorsement of the proposition that prolonged weekends must be provided remains unwavering. The working week should be shorter and workers should have a longer weekend. Task 1: The diagram below shows how one type of coal is used to produce electricity. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. The diagram depicts the process of manufacturing electricity by a specific type of coal. Overall, there are several stages in the process of producing electricity, starting with mining coal in natural environments and ending with distributing the electricity to residential areas and industrial factories. In the first step, coal is excavated by miners and then it is put into the crusher. The next stage is that the crushed coal is delivered to the gasifier to heat. After that, having been heated until transformed into gas, the gas is cooled. While cooling the gas, the waste heat is emitted into the atmosphere. After the cooling stage, the gas is cleaned and then transferred to the gas power plant. At this stage, the gas power plant also gives off the waste heat as the cooling stage and electricity is generated at the same time. The process finishes with the electricity being distributed to housing and factories for humans’ activities. Task 1: The diagram below shows how one type of coal is used to produce electricity. Bài làm: The given line graph depicts the proportion of the population residing in urban areas across four Asian countries, namely Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia over the interval of 5 decades starting from 1970, with projections for 2030 and 2040. Overall, the total urban residents in four nations will experience rising trends throughout the period. Additionally while the rate of population in Malaysia will become the highest, the reverse will be true for that of Thailand. As for the top nations, in the Philippines, the figure was the highest in 1970, at nearly a third, after which it is forecasted to increase steadily to roughly a half in 2040. Meanwhile, Malaysia, which started at just over 30% urban residents in 1970, is expected to surge to nearly 80% by 2040, marking the highest increase among the countries. When it comes to the remaining countries with lower proportion of total population, in 1970, the figures for Thailand and Indonesia were nearly 15% and just below a fifth respectively. By 2000, both Thailand and Indonesia’s total population climbed gradually to nearly 28%. Finally, while the figure for Thailand will witness a progressive increase of approximately 20% by 2040, the percentage of that in Indonesia will soar to roughly 60% by the same period. Task 2: Nowadays eating habits of people around the world are changing, causing them many health problems, including obesity. Why do people tend to eat so badly? What can be done to improve their eating habits? Along with the growth of society comes an array of health-related issues, including obesity given people changing diets. This essay will first delve into the underlying reasons of this phenomenon before proposing some viable solutions to improve the situation. Bad eating habits are largely attributed to the inclination towards a sedentary lifestyle and food advertising. Regarding the former, in light of hectic schedules, many people prioritize fast food and convenience meals, which are often high in calories, sugar, and unhealthy fats rather than cooking by themselves. This shift in priorities often leads to serious health diseases such as overweight, diabetes and even cancer. This is compounded by food advertisements, driving people to buy sugary drinks, high-fat snacks and other unhealthy foods. The marketing strategies of chains like KFC, Lotteria, and Texas Chicken serve as a testament to this trend. To change people's poor dietary habits, the following measures should be taken. First, it is imperative for governments to introduce policies or regulations that tightly control or ban junk food advertising. This can be achieved through initiatives such as imposing hefty fines on violating companies and censoring advertisements’ content before releasing it to the market. For example, the UK has banned junk food ads on TV during children's programming and restricted online ads targeting kids, as well as limited promotional offers on unhealthy foods. In tandem with this, the public needs to be fully cognizant of the health risks posed by overeating and the lack of exercise. This knowledge should be involved in educational programmes for children and spread through several campaigns organized by policymakers. Such a two-pronged approach could go a long way towards cultivating a good habit for eating. In conclusion, what seems to be the core of unhealthy eating patterns may stem from inactive lifestyles and commercialization. Through heightened awareness and the enforcement of stringent regulations, society can work towards reversing this troubling trend. Task 2: Some people say in order to prevent illness and disease, governments should focus on reducing environmental pollution and housing problems. To what extent do you agree and disagree? Along with the growth of human society comes a perennial debate about what governments should do to improve public health. A school of thought holds that it is imperative for them to alleviate environmental degradation and residential challenges. I personally disagree with this proposal, despite acknowledging the reasons for it. Advocates for the enhancement of the environment and housing issues might argue that its direct impacts on public health are irrevocable. Mitigating environmental contamination, they say, can lead to cleaner air and water, thereby reducing respiratory diseases and waterborne illnesses. Also, access to fresh air and clean water sources could lead to healthier food products, which directly benefit the digestive system. By the same token, addressing overcrowding and lack of sanitation might advance living conditions and better overall health for residents. This can be seen in the Dharavi Redevelopment Project in Mumbai. By replacing informal settlements with modern housing and improving access to clean water and proper sewage systems, the project sought to enhance living standards and residents' overall well-being. However, the aforementioned notion is deeply flawed given the fact that a singular focus on the environment and housing is insufficient and that a multi-faceted approach should be adopted. First, governments should prioritize incentivizing individuals to pursue the medical field. This can be achieved through some initiatives such as updating health-related educational programs and providing scholarships for outstanding students or graduates with high entrance exam scores. In tandem with this, it is also essential to raise public awareness, as understanding the repercussions of diseases and illnesses can encourage residents to adopt sustainable practices and maintain healthy living environments. The numerous scholarships offered by Singapore's Ministry of Health Holdings to attract talent to the healthcare sector perfectly exemplify this approach. In conclusion, although tackling pollution and housing challenges can offer substantial benefits, I fervently believe that a combination of actions is necessary to improve overall public well-being. Task 2: With growing number of population in cities. Many people are living in small homes that don’t have outdoor spaces. Is this a positive or negative development? Along with the explosion of population comes a debate concerning the lack of open-air spaces in city housing. While this trend may indeed offer some substantial benefits, these are eclipsed by the potential drawbacks posed to city dwellers. Granted, proponents of compact living contend that eliminating gardens and balconies within urban dwellings can optimize land use. Such buildings, they say, will maximise the residential capacity of a given area, accommodating a larger population. It is estimated that areas with concrete houses can accommodate five times more residents than their counterparts. Social interactions, alongside a strong sense of community, and inclination towards sustainable lifestyle are other advantages. Not only does the lack of outdoor spaces encourage people to seek out public parks and community spaces, but it also fosters a preference for minimalism and reduced unnecessary consumption. The argument in favour of adding open-air areas to houses is further fortified by the numerous disadvantages it can bring to humans. First, physical and mental health issues given the absence of natural light and fresh air, as well as opportunities for physical activities such as gardening and recreation, are the foremost concerns. Many scientists and researchers have emphasized a strong correlation between spending time in nature and improved mental health. Residents without access to outdoor spaces may experience increased feelings of isolation, stress, and even depression. A study by the University of Exeter shows that people who spend at least two hours a week in nature are more likely to report good health and psychological well-being. In conclusion, although the trend of smaller homes without outdoor spaces offers some benefits in terms of land use efficiency, its negative consequences for the health and well-being of residents are far more significant. Therefore, it is essential to prioritize the creation of green spaces and outdoor areas in urban planning to ensure a better quality of life for city dwellers. Word count: 313 words. You should spend about 20 minutes on this task. The table below shows information about the population of New Zealand from 2011 to 2012 by age group. Summarize the formation by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant. You should write at least 150 words. The table depicts the number of New Zealand people in different age groups in 2011 and 2012 as well as their fluctuations during the surveyed period. Overall, while the national population grew slightly, the younger age groups experienced a small decrease. In contrast, the number of middle-aged and senior citizens increased, especially those over 65 years old. When examining oldest age group, we can see that they accounted for only a modest part of the population with under 600 thousand people in 2012 - less than half the number of people aged 40 to 64 in the same year. However, they were the group with the most significant increase of 4%, which was eightfold that of the 40 to 64 group. In the case of younger citizens, there was a slight decline in the number of people under 40, with a 0.2% decrease in both the under 15 and 15 to 39 categories. Despite this modest decrease, these two groups combined still took up half of the population, and those aged 15 to 39 was the most dominant age group of the society with approximately 1.5 million people, though the 40 to 64 group were a close second with 1.3 million citizens. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. ANSWER: The maps illustrate a library's ground floor in 2001 and its redevelopment in 2009. Overall, the library's floor underwent several alterations, most notably the addition of some rooms and the expansion of tables to meet study requirements. In 2001, there were eight small tables centrally located for study and reading, and a fiction room behind. Self-help and History were situated on the left side and Newspaper & Periodicals at the right corner. Additionally, a librarian's desk was positioned just behind the entrance, adjacent to the stairs. By 2009, the tables were expanded into four longer ones and added to replace the former fiction. Self-help and History were reduced in size, making space for Fiction, Kitchen, Economics and Law. Newspaper & Periodicals were replaced by Films & DVDs, next to the newly added computer area. At the backmost part of the library, a children's area was built, dedicated to children's activities. Throughout those changes, the librarian's desk and the stairs remained unchanged. The plans below show the ground floor of a library in 2001 and how it was redeveloped in 2009. Topic: more government's money should be invested in teaching science than other subjects in order for a country to develop and progress. To what extent do you agree or disagree? In this day and age, teaching science in school has been a source of controversy. One school of thought is that the national budget should be used for educating science for students, while I agree that it is beneficial for both individuals and the nation to teach science and other subjects. To begin with, science plays an important role in society. Firstly, at the individual level, people can have more job opportunities in the future by learning science. Due to the development of technology, the demand for technological jobs, such as designing or fixing computers, has increased. Thus, by understanding more aspects of science, people can apply for many kinds of jobs. Additionally, at national levels, educating science can foster economic growth. In fact, learning science contributes to the existence of many new inventions, such as new crop species redundant in disease, enhancing productivity. As a result, it can meet the demand for the local market and exported products, contributing to economic growth. On the other hand, other subjects are also crucial. By learning these subjects, students not only can adapt to diverse work positions but also can solve many unexpected situations. For instance, the student can improve their mental and physical health through physical education classes. They also can be better at calculation by learning math courses. To sum up, educating science can help people have ample job opportunities and bolster economic growth, I strongly believe that it is advantageous to learn both science and other subjects. Task 2: Some people think that living in big cities is bad for people’s health. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. It is believed that living in large cities results in citizens’ lower overall well-being. From my perspective, I agree with this statement It is undeniable that living in large cities can lead to physical health problems. Cities have been modernized for a long time with technological advancements, up-to-date transportation systems, new large buildings, leading to a convenient life. However, urbanization can also cause environmental challenges such as climate change, deforestation, and different kinds of pollution. Consequently, these environmental problems can lead to respiratory disease such as asthma. For example, many parents in the USA are concerned about their children’s health as they may have to go to school in weeks away, which means they have to go outside frequently and absorb carbon dioxide from many forms of transport. Moreover, negative mental health can also stem from residing in large cities. Despite the fact that big cities have a lot of handy facilities that help people streamline tasks in daily life, it can result in a higher cost of living than in rural areas; hence, city-dwellers should work hard and try to get high-paying jobs to live in competitive modern cities unless they risk facing stress and poor mental health. We need not look further than the case of Vietnamese laborers, especially those in Ho Chi Minh City. They might feel stressed when they have to work more hours than the average working time in Vietnam to meet their demands and achieve a better standard of living. In conclusion, I completely agree that living in big cities can negatively affect both people’s physical health and mental health. In my view, local authorities in big cities should spearhead effective initiatives to improve people’s health. Task 2: Some people think that living in big cities is bad for people’s health. Despite greater access to school education, many adults today still cannot read or write. How does this affect them in life? What can government do to help them?
In this modern society, there is controversy about the hardships that illiterate adults are having to endure while there are so many educational institutions providing them with knowledge. In this essay, I will analyze several drawbacks of illiteracy and propose some feasible solutions to mitigate this phenomenon. It is understandable that various limitations associated with literacy have affected people's lives. Among the challenges posed by illiteracy, the inability to comprehend crucial documents hampers access to employment opportunities. To specify, it is difficult for people to do office work if they are unable to understand documents or projects which are provided with specilized informations. As a result, most of them may have to rely on manual work such as jobs in agricultural and construction sectors. For example, due to the low-quality educational facilities in some African countries, the rate of illiterate citizens is high which means that they are poor, lack education, and miss out on opportunities to join the workforce. On top of that, illiterate adults may become victims of criminals, especially when they accidentally access dangerous links on the social media or even tricked into signing unofficial documents which can threaten their financial status and their lives. For instance, the hackers may create some links to gain access to their bank accounts in case of stealing the owners’ money. Therefore, this can negatively affect their lives and their loved ones. However, there are a number of solutions proposed for governments to address these problems. Concerning these issues, the government seriously allocates financial budgets for educational programs to ensure the education of disadvantaged people in remote areas. Accessible schools should be provided for underprivileged basic knowledge to pursue more employment opportunities for them instead of relying on menial work. Furthermore, another solution to eliminate criminals is to strengthen strict control of information posted online and may impose administrative sanctions on those who regularly send threatening links. Additionally, governments can also open webinars or events to educate citizens about the way to avoid cyber crimes by themselves. By strictly implementing these policies, the government can overcome these difficulties and give everyone the opportunity to compete equally as they enter job markets and reduce the risk of criminals, creating a more cilvilized society. In conclusion, the inability to read and write limits people’s choice of profession and places them under risks of cyber criminals. Nevertheless, this issue can be partially resolved by the suggested remedies. Task 2: In many countries, the number of animals and plants is declining. Why do you think this is happening? How can this issue be solved? Along with the growth of human society comes the disappearance of flora and fauna. This essay will first delve into the underlying causes of this phenomenon before proposing some viable solutions to improve the situation. The decline in biodiversity around the world is largely attributed to habitat destruction and illegal hunting. Regarding the former, due to industry, growing human population and agriculture, land development occurs at the expense of many species' natural habitats, prioritizing fostering industrialization and housing demands. This shift in priorities often leads to climate change, and environmental pollution, affecting the survival and reproduction of certain animals and plants. This is compounded by illegal poaching, which drives some animal numbers to endangered levels. The trade-in of exotic animals for pets, traditional medicine, or the black market as a significant threat to many species is a testament to this notion. To combat the loss of plant and animal species, the following measures should be taken. First, it is imperative for governments to introduce more strict laws applying to habitat conservation. This can be achieved through initiatives such as increasing penalties and strengthening supervision over logging activities or opening national parks. For example, countries like Costa Rica have successfully implemented national parks and protected areas to conserve biodiversity. In tandem with this, public awareness should be emphasized through campaigns and education. Schools can add environment education as a new subject to their curriculum to raise students’ awareness. Such a two-pronged approach could go a long way towards cultivating a sense of responsibility to preserve the diversity of our planet’s plants and animals. In conclusion, what seems to be at the core of species decline lies in natural habitat devastation and illicit hunting. By fostering awareness and implementing strict laws, society can work towards reversing this troubling trend. The diagram illustrates a detailed comparison of UK age demographics’ three education levels, namely University degree, school certificate, and no qualifications in 2010. Overall, while no qualifications were the highest in people in 75+, university degree was dominant in the other age ranges, with the highest proportion being observed in 24-35 age bracket. Additionally, education generally declined with age. Regarding the three younger cohorts, British people aged 24-35 led in university degree with 76%, slightly higher than that of the youngest profile, at 71%, which was exactly identical to that of the 35-50 age range. The same rate of school certificates was reported in teenager group and adult category, each contributing 20%, slightly exceeding the data for young adult group, standing at 15%. More notably, all the age ranges exhibited exactly identical rates of no qualifications, with 9% being reported in each age cohort. Concerning retirees and seniors, half and a fifth of retirees had university degree and school certificate, respectively. However, for those over 75, these proportions halved and experienced a roughly sevenfold drop in that order. In stark contrast, compared to 30% of retirees without qualifications, the oldest group registered a significantly higher figure, at 72%, the largest proportion across all the age groups.
